It's been an AMAZING 5 years

After 5 wonderful years Weddings InStyle would like to announce the close of its venue on Murray Street Effective Sept 30, 2014

This has been a challenging decision for me to make as I love the venue, all our clients and the joy of being in the heart of The Byward Market. However the timing is right for me to say good-bye to the Market after 5 amazing years. We have officially outgrown the space and it is next level time so we will not be renewing our lease.

This journey started over 7 years ago when Balance InStyle our personal concierge company was born out of a personal need. I watched a friend struggle with cancer and realized there was a need in the marketplace that wasn’t being filled. There was no one company you could call for everything from A-Z.
There needed to be a “one call does it all” solution – from Glamour to Janitor where people were licensed, bonded and insured and where you knew the quality you were getting in advance. Afterall what do you really know about the people you hire from the yellow pages or online?

We’ve graced the pages of Flare Magazine, McLean’s, House & Home, Food & Wine. Have partnered with some of the largest automotive companies, home builders and large corporations to offer our services to their clients. We are grateful that we are in a position to expand our brand and are getting ready to take it to the next level with franchising.

After a few years in the Concierge industry it became obvious that there were further needs in the events and wedding market that needed to be met.

A place for the intimate and smaller gatherings. You had City Hall and you had the larger hotels. There was no in-betweens that could handle everything under one roof, a place that did it’s homework on vendors and was willing to share their little black book.

We’ve faced many challenges building the business because our main objective and sole purpose was to serve our guests at the highest level. No wedding was too small, no couple would be discriminated against everyone was treated equally at InStyle. We always tried to work with whatever budgets we were presented with. We believed in love so much that we offered free vow renewals on Valentine’s day for a few years because we understood the commitment of marriage and sometimes the recommitment of it. We offered $199.00 ceremonies because we heard of so many that were living as a married couple but couldn’t afford to make it legal. We believe in love.

We bend over backwards because we were so passionate and committed to the vision we created, and we were proud to offer something that no other venue was offering in Ottawa. A full turnkey stress free experience.

Sadly at times were we told we were too expensive and it was a reflection on us, but what many failed to realize is, we merely acted as a broker for all our wonderful wedding industry friends. We were not caters, florists, bakers, dj’s, rental companies or photographers. We were merely the creative minds behind orchestrating it all and allowing our couples to have one point of contact, one bill and one set of contracts to review.

We bared the risks, we absorbed the credit card fees, we spent our time treating each wedding as if it were our own.

Agreed we work with the best that sometimes are a little more expensive then the others but that is a reflection of our standards and us knowing that you can pay now … or pay later with disappointment.

When we make recommendations we are making them knowing that they are fail proof. The cater’s food is tested, the baker’s treats savored, the floral designers work is art in the making and the photographers work is gushed over. We did our homework so our couple’s didn’t have to.

Did we spend countless hours putting ideas and boards together that we couldn’t recover? Of course – would I change a thing? Of course not.

We’ve been blessed to deal with some of the most talented people in the wedding industry. If you want AMAZING flowers – Call Erin from Full Bloom – she’s amazingly talented, her stuff is like art seriously! She is in demand. So book early if you can get her. We’ve also had the privilege of working with Elizabeth from Flowers Talk. She is a real community gal with a vibrant personality. She makes things happen!
Ottawa Flowers was also a company that we used and Pavel and his family run a wonderful business.

Comes down what kind of statement you want to make with flowers.

I’m an icing girl so I fell in love with Auntie Loo’s treats. Their assortments of cupcakes and icing have left me breathless at times. They are adorable, sweet and lovely ladies and we simply cannot get enough of them. They offer gluten free & vegan options and they are AMAZING! They have a location on Nelson Ave so you can always pop in and sample their goodies.
Julie Cole from Sugar & Spice is a master of cakes. In my opinion she is like Ottawa’s very own Cake Boss. She and her husband are adorable. They care, and pour so much love into their creations. They brighten up our venue everytime we book them.
Kate Green Cakes is another example of sheer talent and amazing cakes! We still remember the 11pound cake that she made for one of our couples that you could smell from 10 feet away. Everytime we walked by we wanted to be like a kid and poke our finger in for a taste. She is a true artist.

We LOVED working with Matt from It’s a Matter of Cake – but he just retired and has joined forced with his love Erin from Full Bloom so booking them you get an awesome duo in one.

Party rentals. We’ve watched our friends at Ottawa Special Events grow from AV and staging company to an EVERYTHING company. You need it – they will get it for you with the most amazing customer service you will experience in town hands down.  “No” just doesn’t exist in their vocabulary. They sleep with their iphones just like us so they get it. You need a heater in a pinch they are on it. AV isn’t working properly cause you pushed a button you weren’t suppose to – they are there to save the day. They’ve grown so much over the years that now they offer everything you could ever want and more so it’s literally a one-stop shop. We LOVE them and highly recommend them.

Master Mind Events. They run a tight ship and they too understand customer service. Scott & Jen are on every order and have created a culture of people who care. You are not just another order and your product does not show up in need of cleaning or mending. Unlike some of the other companies in town. Their pricing is competitive and they too are major community folks giving back at every turn.  Great company. Great people.

Groovy Linen has also been a delight to deal with and they have some beautiful linens to choose from. They’ve recently changed hands in ownership and we understand that there is some amazing new stuff coming in daily.

Photographers. We’ve worked with so many over the years. Joel Bedford, Kathi Robertson, Melanie Rebane, Photography by Voula, Bonnie Findlay Foto, and Mark Cooper have all produced amazing shots that have graced our social media pages. At the end of the end – pictures are all you have left to relive the moments so make sure you leave some room in your budget for a great photographer.

Wedding dresses. Saved the best for last. We LOVE David & Christina from Mc Caffrey’s. They make you feel like a million bucks really go the extra mile to make you feel sooooo special. Their creations are all unique and each one is really it’s own creation. Nothing mass produced. Bonus: you get to sip bubbly while dress shopping.
With Love Bridal is another amazing company that we LOVE sending our brides to. Dana has grown so much over the past 5 years and really has an amazing selection of gowns and the personality to match. You are in great hands with either company.
Trying on dresses is such an intimidating process. Especially with all these ridiculous say yes to the dress reality shows. Trust me when I say both these options will help you say yes to YOUR dress without all the drama.

Lastly, I would like to thank the media. You've been so gracious and kind to us.

We are going to miss dealing with all of these wonderful vendors and more on Murray Street but feel that “Sharing is Caring”so we hope you find our recommendations to be worthwhile.

To the other wedding industry professionals I offer you these final words. Be honest. Don’t steal other people’s clients, ideas and marketing. Be imaginative. Treat your clients like they are family. Don’t make promises you can’t keep and if you make a mistake, own it and make it right. Clients come to us for a stress free experience afterall.
Lastly there is a difference between being competitive and copying and passing material off as your own creative thoughts and ideas. A fake is still a fake no matter how you dress it up. Copying is still copying no matter how many words you try to alter. Be an original. Ottawa is a small community and talking bad about others really only ever reflects badly on you.

Finally to all our couples my sincere thanks for allowing us to be a part of the most important day of your life.  Your loyalty as the face of weddings changed only confirmed that creating and designing an all inclusive wedding venue and destination was much needed in Ottawa.  We have loved getting to know each and every one of the over 300 weddings that we have performed over the past 5 years.
Watching your families grow and being given the opportunity to marry your parents, siblings and friends allowed us the opportunity to stay in touch and continue to be a part of your lives. Forever grateful. We have a full season ahead of us and look forward to each and every last wedding we have the privilege to be a part of.

After 5 FABULOUS years we at Weddings InStyle are getting ready to write the final chapter of our wonderful story – The final chapter of this story will conclude with MY VERY OWN wedding. I met and fell in love with the man of my dreams at InStyle 3 years ago when he walked through my doors at 107 Murray in search of an Event Planner. Therefore the last wedding that will be held at Weddings InStyle fittingly will be my own. Meet my future husband and best friend Elia Saikaly

Thank you for all your amazing stories and for allowing us the pleasure to marry you InStyle!
Fear not. We love creating fabulous events and weddings and have every plan to continue to do so, so stay tuned for what's in store. Same team, same high standards, same passion - different book! :)

Many blessings & much love

When One "I Do" is simply not enough!

We LOVE love at Weddings InStyle, so what better way to celebrate the most romantic day of the year then to offer an all day private vow renewals for those looking to recommit their love to one and other.

Marriage is an institution that now a days could use some renewing. Life sometimes gets in the way. People have these blowout weddings, but that doesn’t necessarily correlate with having a long marriage and maintaining it. A vow renewal can be a signifier to oneself and to the larger community that something has endured and that there is a commitment to keep it going.

Good relationships never stop growing. Like fine wine, they get better with age.   No marriage is perfect. Many couples tend to think of marriage as a 50/50 proposition. Actually, the best relationships are 90/10. If you both will give 90% and take only 10%, you will have a formula likely to continue to bring both of you happiness for a lifetime.

Whether you have been married a short time or 60 years we are offering a beautiful setting so that you could renew your vow and recommit your love for each other... InStyle!!!

2014 Weddings Trends to say I DO to!

While we love looking at trends like everyone else - trends are just trends in our opinion and just like fads they come and go. These are just a few that we thought you might consider saying "I do" to if you are looking for something whimsical and fun for your upcoming wedding!

Radiant Orchid

A colour and a name we will be hearing and seeing alot in 2014 as it has been named Pantone 2014 colour of the year. This blush shade of purple and pinkish hues is bound to create a dramatic impact in weddings this year. From flowers to dresses to lights and linens this is a colour we will surely be seeing alot of this coming year.

Monochrome & Mismatched Bridesmaids Dresses

Monochrome and mismatched bridesmaids dresses have been making their mark on the weddings scene for quite some time now.
We LOVE this trend because it adds more color and versatility to your entourage if you have one. Maybe pepto bismol pink isn't everyone's thing, but various shades of blush might work.  Check out some other styles here

Low Back Wedding Gowns
The Wedding Dress industry is bringing "Sexy Back" this year with the dramatic backless wedding gown.

Unplugged Weddings
We think that this is a trend that should stay around long after 2014 is done with. The main reason we love this idea is that you avoid your guests being captured in the background of your photographers shots during the ceremony, first dance, cake cutting and other photo worthy moments. We've seen it SO many times and this idea takes care of it! It also allows your guests to be fully present and enjoy all the hard work that you've put into your special day.

Pinterest
Pinterest is really changing the game for the wedding industry. Couples in 2014 are really strong about bringing their style into the wedding so people recognize whose wedding they're at.

We love it because we know what people want. It's how they live, how they decorate their home. They want their wedding to be a reflection of their lives. If you don't have a Pinterest account get one! It will make your planning process alot easier and will keep things organized for all to see. Happy Pinning!

AMAZING Proposal!!!!

Megan and John; Amazing Proposal in Pictures

The Proposal Story:

Megan had a hunch that John was getting ready to propose sometime this year. She was on her toes…as any girl who has been dating a guy for an extended point of time is. Aside from his real full time job, John owns a tacky Christmas sweater company, Skedouche. Every year they add new products and he invites all of his friends to a photo shoot where they kick off the busy season and have fun modeling these sweaters. Megan had one of those mornings where she couldn’t decide what shoes to wear and her power went out while doing her hair. It was safe to say she was a little frazzled when she showed up to the meeting spot for the Skedouche photo shoot.
Megan searched outside for everyone. Little did she know that her childhood best friend, Katie O, and I were waiting inside the coffee shop with a note that would change her life. Katie and I freaked out and called john a billion times because she was late patiently waited inside until we saw Megan wondering outside like a lost soul. We ran outside and told her we needed to borrow her phone (she wasn’t allowed to have it all day) and handed her a sweet note with a her first of many clues in a scavenger hunt that would end with a proposal.
The note said:
Dear Megan,
I have a confession to make: there is no photo-shoot today. Instead, this day is dedicated entirely to you, the love of my life! I have been thinking about how I would ask you to marry me for quite some time. I know you have had “hunches” that it may be sometime in the fall, so it’s difficult to create that “surprise factor” without being too obvious. Instead of just popping the question out of the blue, I’m choosing to embrace the fun and excitement of getting engaged and have planned a scavenger hunt for you today. Spoiler alert – if you complete the scavenger hunt, then I will reward you by asking you a very important, life-changing question.
Rules:
• You are not allowed to use your cell phone and you are not allowed to borrow any other cell phone to make calls, post to Facebook, etc.
• At each clue, you must read the clue out loud and someone must film you with a flipcam.
So follow the clues that I give you and above all, have fun! Today is all about you!
Love,
John
The first clue of the scavenger hunt lead us to the Hyatt in Reston Town Center. When walking to find her first clue, we passed a breast cancer run. Megan, on the other hand thought AM I GETTING PROPOSED TO BY A FLASH MOB?!? No Megan, rest easy. When we arrived at the Hyatt, there was a limo waiting. Here’s a picture of John with the driver setting it all up!
The driver handed her a clue that read:
You can’t go on a proper scavenger hunt without a limo. This chariot will take you wherever you need to go and comes complete with mimosas and a decent Kleenex supply. At the final stop on your scavenger hunt, you will need certain things, so many of your clues will allow you to acquire these key items. Your next clue is waiting for you at 13067 Worldgate Drive in Herndon.
We jumped in the “chariot” and found a bulk supply of Klenex, CDs with songs that they listened to during their “courtship” (yes, there was a crunk-rap CD) and mimosas.
Megan was still a little shocked. She knew what was happening, but as the day went on the tears started falling more and more. This was one of the first times it really started to sink in.
We road our chariot to the next clue…a nail salon! Does this guy think of everything or what? Not only was it just a nail salon…but it was a nail salon with two more of her best friends from college waiting for her! Hellooo LBG and Savino! There, they handed her another clue that read:
Can you imagine getting engaged and having ugly and damaged nails? Me neither! Use the cash provided to get everyone’s fingernails “did”. (hint: for yours, go with French Tips). Your next clue will be given when you are done.
Not only did Megan get her nails done, but he treated ALL of us!
The next clue said: Do you remember the time we first kissed? Sharing a poncho has never been as fun as that was! Your next clue is waiting for you at that very spot.
We all jumped into the chariot, with our newest additions, and headed to the Wolf Trap! Megan said she didn’t think John would be there, but she DEFINITELY was getting nervous driving up there. That was the best part of the entire day. WE knew when it was ending, but Megan thought that at any stop John could be waiting for her. Little did she know this was the first of many stops! Waiting for her, sitting in the same place they had their first kiss was Megan’s high school friend and college roommate, Chelsea!
Chelsea handed her the next clue:
Because we were in a long distance relationship, we definitely did not have a typical dating schedule. In fact, our first date was actually AFTER we officially started dating. I remember it like it was yesterday – we checked the wait at two restaurants with the agreement that we would go to the one with the lower wait time. As chance would have it, we ended up enjoying a flight of beer at the spot where your next clue is waiting.
Onward to Tysons Mall to Gordon Biersch! Of course it’s not just any other lunch, that’s not John’s style. We walked in to find her older SISTER, Katie K, sitting at the table waiting for her. This is when the tears really started flowing. THEN, out popped another college friend who flew up just for this special day. I didn’t get a picture of this because we were just as surprised as it my Megan. But just for the record- Regina was hiding in a bush.
After lunch, we gave Megan the next clue.
I hope you enjoyed the lunch! For your next clue, you don’t have to go far…it is waiting for you at Francesca’s boutique in the mall. (This also included a map of the Mall. Thanks John, although I’m sure Megan has the layout of that mall engraved into her memory by now.
As we walked through the store (hesitantly), we noticed 4 little feet coming out of the dressing room in the back. Oh hello there little sisters!
They handed Megan another clue that read:
Before you are given your next clue, you must first buy a nice dress and a pair of shoes for tonight. Given the size of your posse, you should have a wealth of opinions.Your dress should be classy and elegant – just like you! Feel free to shop around at any store in Tysons, but remember you only have two hours until the limo departs. So find a nice dress, grab some shoes, and you will be given the next clue once you are done. Happy Shopping!
LET THE SHOPPING BEGIN!
After we did some damage at Nordstrom responsibly shopped, Megan was given her next clue. This is where the real nerd in John comes out…
Fun fact – did you know that I have owned the domain name “megankaplar.com” since April 2011? Let’s just say I’ve had a hunch for a while…Your next clue is waiting for you on www.megankaplar.com.
On this webpage was a picture of them and this note: Your next clue is waiting for you at the place where we shared our first New Year’s Eve together.
We then found our chariot and headed to the Gaylord National in D.C. (well, technically Maryland). This may have been one of the funniest parts of the trip. Megan was CONVINCED this was the place John would propose. She even started to fix her makeup in the car. I would be lying if I didn’t say that we all egged her on a little.
Well, we got to the hotel and no John. She started telling us how mean of a trick it was. Meanwhile, she had another important visitor….

Hello Mama!

And of course, Mom had another clue for Megan.
Grab your dress and shoes, and head up to the suite that I have prepared for you. Take a shower and get yourself ready for tonight. But be quick -you have only 1.5 hours until you receive your next clue!
After all of us got dolled up, we headed to the front lawn to take some pictures. I think Megan also thought this may be where John was. Until she was handed another clue.
Tell the girls to pack up their suitcases and take them in the limo. You can leave your stuff in the hotel room. Your next clue is waiting for you at your favorite restaurant in downtown Clifton. And no, it’s not the pub, or Peterson’s. Go there and buy a round of Titanics for you and the girls!
This is when Megan responded, “WE CAME HERE FOR NOTHING?!?!” I think she was ready to see her man. But alas, we had our round.
We all piled back into the chariot and headed Trumer’s in downtown Clifton to get a round of their famous drinks. After a round…or two…Megan was handed her 13th clue:
Your next clue is waiting for you at the place where I met the love of my life for the very first time.
We were headed back to Megan’s childhood home. Megan knew that John would do something creative, maybe transform the backyard with some candles or some nice signage, but she really had NO idea what John had done. We jumped back into the limo for the final time and headed back home.
We also jammed out to some Bruno Mars I Think I Wanna Marry You and did some MEGAN! MEGAN! MEGAN! chants.
As we were pulling into her neighborhood, Katie pulled out John’s tie to blindfold her. Megan was a nervous nervous girl. We pulled up to her house and all scurried out of the limo. Katie walked her up to the front of her house where she heard the last and FINAL clue being read to her. She felt someone grab her hand and heard a familiar voice…her dad.
Congratulations Megan! You have arrived at your final destination. We are standing at the very spot where we first met back in 2008. I remember shaking your hand and thinking to myself what beautiful woman you were, and finally understanding why Danny K kept me away from you for so long! I had no idea that day that I had just met the love of my life. As promised, the time has come to ask you a very important question, and there is no better place to ask then here at the place where we first met.
As her blindfold was removed, she walked around back to find the most stunning, beautiful, amazing thing ever….John. And a backyard transformed with chandeliers hanging from trees.

10 hours after the day began, Megan walked through her backyard and said “Yes” to the man of her dreams….Amazing story told by best friend and photographer Susan Lines.
